Feb 5, 2008 IMPORTANT U.S. SENATE VOTE ON THE ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE LATER THIS WEEK

CALL YOUR SENATORS AT 1-866-924-NAHB (6242)

Thank you for placing calls into Congress over the past couple of weeks in an effort to generate support for the inclusion of housing stimulus measures in an economic stimulus package.

Legislation continues to move swiftly through the U.S. Senate.  Last night (Feb. 4), the Senate voted to move forward with thirty hours of debate on the economic stimulus package.  They are scheduled to have a vote later in the week.

We are being heard.  On the Senate floor yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) mentioned the grassroots outreach he has received from the housing industry on the economic stimulus package.  We need to keep up the pressure in the days ahead to ensure that housing measures are included in any final Senate economic stimulus bill.

CALL TO ACTION

Please take a moment to call your U.S. Senators using the NAHB Legislative Hotline, at 1-866-924-NAHB (6242) and get connected, free-of-charge.  Tell them to support the Senate Stimulus Package because it:

·        Increases the Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs) and Federal Housing Authority (FHA) loan limits

·        Increases the Mortgage Revenue Bond (MRB) program

·        Expands the Net Operating Loss (NOL) tax deduction

·        Extends the Home Energy Efficiency tax credit

Special Note: Republicans senators are especially important to this effort. If you live in a state with a Republican senator, please make an extra effort to communicate the message outlined in the Call to Action above.

HOTLINE INSTRUCTIONS

When you call the NAHB Legislative Hotline, you will hear a brief message about the economic stimulus package.

  1. You will be asked to enter your zip code, and then be given the option to select the first of your two U.S. Senators.  Please stay on the line between calls as the system works to patch you through. You will then be patched through to your second Senator.
  2. Tell them who you are, where you are calling from and your connection to the housing industry (legislative offices want to know they are talking to constituents).
  3. Inform them that you are calling on behalf of the National Association of Home Builders.
  4. Communicate the bulleted messages above.

To view the letters NAHB sent to the Senate Majority and Minority Leaders click on the titles.

It is especially important to provide feedback from your calls to the Capitol. Please email us at builderlink@nahb.com with any feedback or questions.

Thank you for your help with this effort!
